Be Well: The New Lehigh University Wellness Program

You are here

Sunday, September 22, 2013

Despite what your parents might think, we all have room for improvement, especially when it comes to taking care of ourselves.  So, on January 14, 2014, Lehigh will unveil a revamped wellness program, Be Well: Mind Body Spirit, and we hope you’ll get involved.

Be Well focuses on more than just your physical health – it also includes stress management, financial security, job satisfaction, and being part of a strong community at work and at home.

Be Well came about as a direct result of the Benefits Allocation Review. Through this increased commitment to a culture of well being, faculty and staff will have access to tools and incentives that can make a major impact. Lehigh University wants to support you to be your absolute best, whatever that means to you.

What Is Be Well?

Be Well is Lehigh’s exclusive innovative, online based wellness program. The system is based on gamification strategies to provide tools to increase overall well being in an engaging, rewarding way.  Aduro, the vendorselected in a competitive bidding process, customizes the program and website to meet the needs of each organization.

Participating in the program is completely voluntary and confidential. But if you want to maintain or improve your wellness, it’s a great way to go. The program offers you a chance to earn points that result in rewards and special opportunities. These include a monthly Wellness Credit, fancy activity devices, gift cards, recognition, and worldwide celebrity-status (hey, you never know).

Lindsay Lagreid of Aduro says that other organizations that use similar Aduro designed web-based wellness programs experience positive results.

The Wellness Program becomes a platform for building and strengthening community and culture. It sometimes is the catalyst needed for people to make big changes,” Lindsay noted.“We've had people share that they've lost significant amounts of weight, found out that they had dangerously high blood pressure and began managing it, or that they've found a group of coworkers to support each other in reaching various wellness goals.”

Here’s how it works:

  • First, when you get your personal login link via email on January 14, go in and create your account.

  • Next, take the confidential online well-being assessment to get a broad vision of where you are, and where you may want to focus extra attention.

  • Then, learn your current health numbers at the onsite HealthScan Plus event January 21, 22, and 23 (or by visiting your doctor or a participating lab that can fax in your results).

  • And, Finally, create a customized wellness plan tailored to your goals and visions and start participating in fun and competitive online wellness challenges and activities to earn points and climb the rewards ladder

Connecting With Lehigh

Doug Strange, director of Lehigh’s Welch Fitness Center, has been involved in the development ofBe Well since the start. Thanks to his efforts, Be Well includes special incentives and opportunities to take advantage of the fitness amenities that are available right on campus.

“I am very excited about collaborating with the Be Well incentive program for fitness and wellness at Lehigh,” Doug said recently.  “We have developed an in-house ‘super savings incentive’ offering a 50% discount on the spring fitness class options and/or our new Personal Training programs. Completing level one automatically qualifies you for this great savings.”

Doug hopes to see many more faculty and staff at the Welch Fitness Center this year. “This is an amazing collaboration of support for the benefit of the faculty and staff and I am proud to be a part of it,” he noted. “Here at Lehigh we are the best house for fitness and wellness. We are happy to be a part of the Be Well family.”

Health And Wellness Coaching

Another benefit of the Be Well program is access to health and wellness coaching. Lindsay says the coaches are objective and dedicated to you. “Your coach will not judge or diagnose you,” she said.“Instead they are here to support you in the fulfillment of your personal visions and goals.”

When should you contact a coach?

  • You are ready to make a change, but don't know where to start.
  • You want to personalize your fitness or nutrition plan.
  • You've had enough of being stopped by stress.
  • You are ready to kick a habit, smoking or otherwise, once and for all.
  • You know what you want, but are frustrated with your progress.
  • You want to move past barriers and excuses and see results.
