Jennifer Cunningham
Assistant Vice President, Alumni Affairs
Commutes by bicycle from North Bethlehem
Length of Commute: 8 miles

Advice for new car-free commuters:
Find the safest route, even if it means you ride a little further. That means using intersections with traffic lights to turn left onto busy roads (instead of stop signs), wider avenues with good shoulders and not too many parked cars. Watch out for potholes and road debris: flat tires are the worst. Get panniers aka saddlebags instead of a backpack so your back doesn't get all sweaty. And fenders, so when the road's wet you don't get the splatter on your rear end.

Neha Kavan
Graphic Designer, Communications and Public Affairs
Commutes on foot from North Bethlehem
Length of Commute: 1 mile

Best part of her commute:
The walk home provides a transition time between work and personal life. I listen to music, soak in the views from the bridge and am more relaxed at the end of the day.

Advice for new car-free commuters:
Do a practice ride on the weekend to see how hard the ride is and to find out if you will sweat enough to need to shower before starting the work day.

Sharon Wiles-Young (left), Director, Library Access, LTS
Commute from West Bethlehem on foot
Length of walk- 1.5 miles

Advice for new car-free commuters:

Sharon: I find that it is much easier for me to exercise when I have a goal like using my car less, or make a plan to walk to a store, or to bike to an event or meeting. You will be surprised how you can fit a walk or bike into your day and how you can use your car less just give it a try.

Christy: Live in town! Find a partner you enjoy talking to, but have an agreement that you leave work discussions for work hours.
